1.      What is the difference between psychotherapy and Life Coaching?
One needs a license to practice psychotherapy, but not for coaching.  Many life coaches are professionally trained mental health practitioners and/or have been successful in their own professional or personal lives.  Many coaches have certifications in coaching.

The major difference is that people seek psychotherapists because they are in psychological pain and experience anxiety, depression, sexual dysfunction, low self-esteem, obsessions and compulsions, lack of identity, etc.  Coaching takes over where psychotherapy leaves off.  People seek coaches because they already have a pretty good life, but want to push themselves toward a goal, or to enhance some aspect of their lives.

As a psychotherapist, I am able to use coaching as a clinical method in my practice to help people, and very often after a psychological issue is resolved the person is ready to enhance his/her life and wants to continue sessions in order to do so.

2.      Can I use my Insurance?  (I am a provider for Aetna and Blue Shield)
Yes.  If you have private insurance, I can give you a completed bill that shows your payments at the end of each month and you can submit it to your insurance company for reimbursement.  Most PPO’s allow reimbursement for ‘outside providers.’

Before you search for a therapist, you should call your insurance, PPO, and HMO and ask them these questions:

a.    Does my insurance cover psychotherapy? (if they don’t, stop here)

b.    Does my insurance cover outside providers?  If so, how much?

c.    How much does my insurance pay per session?

d.    How many sessions does my insurance pay per year?

e.    Is there a co-payment I have to pay?

f.     Is there anything else I need to know to use my insurance for psychotherapy?

3.      Can I use my insurance for coaching?
No, you may not use your health insurance for coaching.  However, you may be able to use your coaching fees as a deduction for your income taxes.  Check with your CPA about this.

4.      Can I still work with you if I live out of town?
Yes, if you live in the state of California, you can work with me via the telephone for both psychotherapy and coaching.  If you live outside of California, you can still work with me via the phone, but it is limited to coaching.  Check out coaching here.

Anyone can buy my products or tele-classes from anywhere if they seem appropriate for you.

5.      How do I start?
